Moor wins for Bideford rowers
THE West of England Amateur Rowing Association's regatta circuit moved to Exmoor at the weekend for the Wimbleball Lake Regatta, bringing more successes for both the Bideford rowing clubs.
Despite a number of the rowers being away on holiday Bideford Reds still managed to secure three wins at the Wimbleball Lake Regatta on Saturday.
What was particularly pleasing for the club was that all three victories were secured by rowers who had previous not won a race.
Fifteen-year-old Laura Atkinson caused, perhaps, the biggest upset of the day in the final of the Ladies Junior 16 single sculls. Rowing against girls a year older and who had also won this event at earlier regattas, she produced an inspired performance to finish 11/2 lengths clear of the other six crews.
Lee Dancer, a PT Instructor at the RMB Chivenor, defeated the current leader of the Senior Single Sculls to record his first win of the year. The other win came in the Ladies Junior 14 double sculls, where Katie Powe and Amy Brown overcame the strong Dart Totnes combination in their final.
Bideford Blues veterans again showed the youngsters the way, with Colin Pennington, Ian Mulholland, Nigel Cann , Neil Pennington and Holly Pennington, cox, being the quickest of the five boats in their final.
The Ladies' Novice Fours crew couldn't repeat their heroics the previous week, finishing out of the places, but took second in the Ladies Under 18 fours.
There were third places for both the Boys Under 16 and Boys Under 14 quadruple scull fours and for the Men's Senior C four of Shaun Wilson, Andrew Wilson, Jon Hare, Matt Colwill and Darren Harnett, cox.
