Phone mast: law unjust
SIR - Today I have received a letter from the Planning Inspectorate, at Bristol, containing the unwelcome news that Torridge District Council's decision to refuse permission for the erection of a mobile phone mast on St Mary's Church, Bideford, has been overturned, which means that this monstrous project can now go ahead - to the detriment of the health of people living nearby.
I am afraid Government pressure has played its part in this decision. What is worrying is that the research on the possibly harmful effects of these masts is based on biased and flawed research by Government or cellular phone company-backed institutions.
The most recent research was based on the experience of volunteers who were limited to a one-off contact with these rays, which made no allowance for the cumulative effect of radiation and so, in my opinion, was completely unscientific.
Evidence to support our claims is starting to come in thick and fast, however. Dr George Carlo - America's leading electro-magnetic expert, said, in a lecture he delivered to our House of Commons in February 2007, that cell damage from these rays will be irreversible.
We have been given six weeks to notify the Inspectorate if we wish to take this matter to the High Court. The Inspectorate has unlimited public funds at its disposal: we have none and must conclude that the Law, in this case, is flawed, unjust and undemocratic.
E M Roberts (Mrs),
Bideford.
