Drug users targeted in Barnstaple stop and search swoop

TRAINED drugs dogs helped police to stop and search 30 people suspected of carrying illegal substances in Barnstaple on Friday night.

Officers visited eight town centre pubs and clubs in the "Police Against Drugs" crackdown.

One arrest was made for possession of Class A drugs, while several street warnings were issued for possession of cannabis. In addition, police dealt with a number of small disorder incidents and gathered intelligence regarding isolated incidents of underage drinking.

The passive drugs dogs used in the operation are trained to alert their handlers when they believe a person has a quantity of drugs on them.

Police spokesman, PC Terry Hodgson, said the response from both licensees, door staff and members of the public had been very positive.

He said: "The publicans were more than happy to have police on their premises as this promoted an environment that allowed those without drugs to enjoy their evening with minimal disruption.

"This operation showed what can be achieved with a partnership approach towards dealing with criminal activity and antisocial behaviour.

"It also raises public confidence that police will deal positively with the small amount of individuals who engage in drugs and this activity will not be tolerated on the streets of North Devon.
