Westward Ho!

Westward Ho! beach and pebble ridge.
• Westward Ho! beach and pebble ridge.

Three miles of golden sands and a name taken from one of the world’s most popular stories. That’s Westward Ho! A resort which offers the ideal family holiday.

Charles Kingsley loved it. He wrote much of his famous book there. His statue stands on the quay at Bideford. It is an excellent resort for the young family, with its beach, amusements, pubs, clubs and restaurants. And home to the country’s oldest golf links, the Royal North Devon Golf Club.

It is also home to various adventure schools which give instruction in activities like wind surfing, water skiing, canoeing and abseiling.

Come here in May and you can join in the annual Pot Walloping Festival, when people of all ages go down to the beach and pick up the sea-strewn pebbles and throw them back on to the ridge. Just behind the pebbleridge is the village cricket ground, home of Bideford, Westward Ho! and Littleham Cricket Club. It is a popular destination for touring sides, so you will often find a match going on during the week in addition to the weekend league matches and evening youth games.

The Visitors’ Centre at Northam Burrows has a fascinating exhibition which explains the phenomenon of the pebbleridge. That is, when you can tear the family away from those golden sands!
