Westward Ho!
Charles Kingsley loved Westward Ho! He wrote much of his famous book of the same name there, and his statue stands on the quay at Bideford.

It is an excellent resort for young families, with its fantastic beach, amusements, pubs, clubs and restaurants. And it’s home to the country’s oldest golf links, the Royal North Devon Golf Club.
It is also home to various adventure schools which give instruction in activities like windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing and abseiling.
Visit in May and you can join in the annual Pot Walloping Festival, when people of all ages go down to the beach and pick up the sea-strewn pebbles and throw them back onto the ridge. The Visitors’ Centre at Northam Burrows also has a fascinating exhibition which explains the phenomenon of the pebbleridge.
Just behind the pebbleridge is the village cricket ground, home of Bideford, Westward Ho! and Littleham Cricket Club. It is a popular destination for touring sides, so you will often find a match going on during the week in addition to the weekend league matches and evening youth games.
To find out everything that’s going on during the summer, just pay a visit to the WHISH shop in the village, where all will be revealed. That is, when you can tear the family away from those golden sands!
