Appledore
Drive
around from the Burrows and you will arrive at the thriving fishing village of
Appledore, with boats bobbing on the River Torridge. The village offers a splendid
range of shops, hotels, pubs and galleries.
Appledore has been a
thriving fishing and trading village since the 14th century. Many of the fishermens
cottages in the quaint, narrow streets date back to Elizabethan times. The Church
of St Marys was built in 1837 and the tower was added in 1909.
Another
place of interest is the North Devon Maritime Museum, each room of which depicts
a different aspect of life at sea. Today, the Quay is the focus of village life.
From there you can take a trip on the River Torridge with Tarka Cruises, or take
the ferry service across the river to Instow.
