THE picturesque buildings of Lynmouth. |
Many people still
remember Lynton and Lynmouth for the flood disaster which occurred in the summer
of 1952. More than 30 people lost their lives when the river was turned into a
raging torrent by heavy storms on Exmoor. Many properties were destroyed
and lives changed forever. But such a disaster cannot happen again. River beds
have been widened, Lynmouth has been rebuilt and the twin villages have regained
their picturesque composure.

Lynmouth harbour |
Two years ago the 50th anniversary
of the tragedy was marked with the unveiling of a plain cross by the Bishop of
Exeter, the Right Rev Michael Langrish.
Linking the villages is the famous
cliff railway, which is run on water power! A ride both up and down is not to
be missed. The views are absolutely spectacular and this attraction now has a
restaurant facility.
This area is known as Englands Little Switzerland
and it is easy to see why when you are confronted by some of the steepest hills
and most tortuous bends the county has to offer.
Lynmouth nestles at the
foot of imposing cliffs, some 500 feet below Lynton. It has a pretty harbour which
attracts visitors like a magnet and there are plenty of shops for browsers, along
with other facilities. |
