ALMOST all had been touched by cancer through family or friends. Every one of the 2,500 women who took part in Sunday's Race for Life in Barnstaple put their best foot forward to raise sponsorship for Cancer Research.

Their ages ranging from just two to 80 years, they warmed up to music before the start and they walked, jogged or ran the five-kilometre route in an atmosphere of determination and fun.

Organiser Tracey Dodge said: "We were really pleased with the turnout. Women came from a wide area, including Mid-Devon as well as North Devon. There was a really great crowd and the whole atmosphere was one of enthusiasm, support and very family orientated.

"Based on sponsorship pledges and money raised in previous years we are hoping to reach a target of £174,000, although we will not know the exact amount until all the money comes in."
