Stepping out for hospice

PICTURE SPECIAL - WALK FOR LIFE 2007

HUNDREDS of walkers made light of the grey conditions on Sunday to shine in support of the North Devon Hospice.
Almost 600 people, young and old, set off on 10 simultaneous coastguard-led coastal and countryside walks to help raise thousands of pounds at the fourth annual Walk for Life.

It didn’t matter that the winter cagoules had to come out for another airing, walkers put their best feet forward and a smile on their faces in memory of loved ones, support of friends, or simply to take in a breath of fresh air and some of the finest scenery the British Isles has to offer.

“Despite the weather, the event has once again been very successful,” hospice community fundraiser Ali Hunt told the Gazette.

“Although the total amount raised has yet to be counted, thousands of pounds have been pledged and I am almost certain that we will exceed last year’s total of £18,000.”

The last walkers came in at 4.30pm on the Clovelly to Hartland Quay walk.

“Everyone finished,” added Ali.

“They were cold and wet but in such great spirits and loads of people have said that they’ll be back to do the event next year.”

HM Coastguard Bideford sector manager Simon Wiseman said he was delighted with the support the event had received.

“People have braved some of the toughest of conditions and have been very brave,” he said.

“We are all delighted that the event has once again been a fantastic success.”
