A PINK army gathered in Barnstaple on Sunday as more than 3,000 women took part in the town’s spectacular Race for Life charity runs.
Now the race is on to collect all their sponsorships, with the organisers hoping to beat the event’s fund raising target of £268,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Young and not-so-young, runners and walkers of all ages, some sporting fancy dress and most in the race colour pink, completed the five kilometre race which started and finished at the Tarka Tennis Centre.
So many took part that the day was divided into two races, with 2,000 runners taking part in the morning and another 1,000-plus in the afternoon.
Names and pictures of loved ones who had fallen victim to cancer adorned almost every outfit – and some of the runners were themselves fighting the disease – providing a poignant reminder of what the race was all about.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, supported by Tesco, is a national series of walks or runs for women which are being held across the UK this summer.
Barnstaple race organiser Scott Renken said: “The Barnstaple events made such a great day and I hope everyone who took part really enjoyed it. But we must not forget the reason why we all came together – to raise money to help more people survive cancer.”
