THOUSANDS of people turned out in Pilton on Saturday for the village’s annual Green Man Day celebrations.

The Barnstaple community well and truly gave grey skies the elbow and made sure that the colourful annual ritual, marking spring rebirth and renewal, brought Pilton Street, Pilton House and the Rotary Gardens to life in striking shades of green.

And they even managed to add a splash of the green stuff to the rest of Barnstaple, as mid-morning shoppers on the town’s High Street gave way to a colourful carnival procession that weaved its way through the town on route from the Square to Pilton.

A packed day of entertainment included a feast of live music, as well as a double showing of the Green Man Pageant – a colourful and lively performance depicting the encounter between the Green Man and the Pilton Prior.

Scores of stalls and sideshows lined Pilton Street and spilled into the Rotary Gardens, while a host of imaginative costumed characters mingled with the crowds.
