WHILE the rest of the country squelched through floodwaters the headline day at GoldCoast Oceanfest in Croyde defied the weathermen to pull in the crowds.

Thousands headed to the beach and through the GoldCoast arena gates to enjoy the premier sports, music and lifestyle festival in almost uninterrupted sunshine.

“We counted our blessing with the weather, but everything else, in terms of the organisation was absolutely spot on,” said festival director Warren Latham.

“The visitors, residents of Croyde, authorities, police and support services all did themselves proud.

“We keep raising the game in terms of quality and that will be our aim again as we head towards year 10 in 2008!”

Wherever people turned there was something to see or do during the three-day event, with live music, stunning demonstrations of skate and trials biking, trade village, beer, food – and sun.

Beach sports included the acrobatic foot volley, Parkdean Holidays beach volleyball, beach soccer, the gruelling Aquathon (run, swim, run) and the Big Boy Paddle Race.

Friday was Education Day as 1,500 youngsters from Devon primary schools enjoyed a day of games, workshops and fun.

Throughout the festival there was a serious message about preserving marine and coastal environments for all to enjoy.
