Torrington Carnival - May 2007
TORRINGTON stages the first carnival of the year in North Devon and, coming so quickly after the May Day celebrations, could easily be a case of “after the lord mayor’s show.”
But this year’s event oozed quality and was enthusiastically supported by townsfolk who lined the route of the big parade.
Transport was a recurring theme among the good number of entries, with Viking ships, a fabulous train and even an aeroplane taking their places in the procession.
It was the Soul Train, made in a month by the Davey family of New Street, which won the trophy for the best overall float.
Other results were: Best Comic Float, Wizard of Oz, S J Easterbrook; Best Juvenile Float, Wild West, Torrington Girl Guides; Best Walking Character, Torrington Old Bill, Bill Best; Adult or Child in Pairs, Punch and Judy; Three or more adults, Viking Warriors; Best Carnival Queen, Bude.
