THOUSANDS of townsfolk turned out once again to watch the Lighting the Lights ceremony in Ilfracombe.
Radio personality Ian Brass performed the festive switch-on ceremony from an open-topped bus outside the town’s war memorial.
Earlier, town crier Roy Goodwin had led hundreds in a lantern procession through the High Street..
Carols and prayers were led by the Rector of Ilfracombe, the Rev Preb Nigel Jackson-Stevens and the parish church choir.
A fireworks display accompanied the switch-on before the crowds followed the Blazing Sounds Band and the Round Table Santa float back to the High Street for late night Christmas shopping.
A special guest at this year was Alan Dykes, finance director of local power supply manufacturer Lambda UK.
The firm came to the rescue this year by donating £5,000 towards the cost of the festive lighting.
Ada Rawicz, the firm’s managing director, said: “As a local company, the Christmas lights are as as an important part of our celebrations as they are to every other Ilfracombe resident.
“We are really pleased to be able to help the town look its best.”
Ilfracombe Mayor Cllr John Swan said: “Lamda’s donation pays for the complete replacement and refurbishment of the lights and their fittings. I must say a big thank-you to the company. It shows the Christmas spirit is still very much alive.”
