BARNSTAPLE is returning to normality after a hectic four days of annual fair and carnival celebrations.
The festivities began with a ceremony steeped in tradition at the Guildhall and erupted in a riot of colour on the Saturday at what organisers described as one of the largest and best carnivals in recent memory.
The hours put in by the town’s dedicated carnival committee, as well as all the hard work that went into transforming a fleet of 52 floats from as far afield as Minehead, was not wasted on a crowd of thousands, who filled the streets and set the town a-buzz with carnival atmosphere.
The colourful and creative 1,360ft-long procession, almost 150ft longer than last year, was even spared the predicted late September showers, fine weather ensuring there was no rain on this parade.
The best float award went to the Falcons Gymnastic team for their “Big-Top” circus-themed creation.
“It is very difficult to estimate how many people attended, but I would say that it was certainly one of the biggest crowds in Barnstaple for many years,” said carnival committee chairman Mel Lovering.
“It really was a fantastic event and the fireworks were the best we’ve ever had. I’d like to say a massive thank-you to everyone that took part, helped out or showed their support in any way.”
Miss Lovering added that monies raised were still being counted.
