Ilfracombe Victorian Celebrations
PICTURE SPECIAL
COLOUR, costumes and a profusion of petticoats all worked
to ensure the 19th Ilfracombe Victorian Celebration went off
in style.
As ever there was a full week of fun events and activities,
all organised by a small but hard working committee of volunteers.
Highlights included the hilarious Suffragette March, Bathing
Belles, the Mayors Garden Party and a grand finale on
Saturday with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Landmark,
followed by fireworks.
Sunday began with the colourful Ilfracombe Town Criers
Competition and ended with a final pageant featuring Bideford
Youth Pipe and Coventry City Salvation Army bands, toy and
shire horses, Queen Victoria and many costumed walkers.
Chairman John Karslake said there had been a particularly
good response to a visit by the paddle steamer Waverley on
Saturday, with 250 people in full costume.
Other events were also well supported, everyone enjoyed
them and the visitors loved it, he said.
Thanks to a dedicated committee, who have worked throughout
the week as well as in the build up - without them it would
not happen.
Thanks also to the district Parks Department for the
very successful childrens day at Bicclescombe.
Now we are building to our 20th anniversary next year
and hope it will be even bigger and better.
