THOUSANDS of people turned out to see Bidefords carnival
parade and the sight and sounds of massed pipes and drums representing
11 different bands.
One of the biggest crowds of recent years lined the quayside and
the towns streets as the colourful procession passed by. Many
stayed on after the carnival was over for a performance by the massed
bands of well over 100 musicians from across the country.
The evening of entertainment, which raised funds for a breast cancer
charity, ended with a fireworks display.
Carnival honours went to East-the-Water Primary School with a depiction
of Planet Earth in which children dressed as a variety of creatures
in jungle, desert, sea and arctic settings. It took both the overall
trophy and the childrens section award.
Overall runners-up and winners of the carnivals special television
theme were Bideford St John Ambulance Brigade and its look at the
childrens television programme CBeebies.
Other colourful, comical and topical entries made it one of the
best parades in recent years, with a welter of walking characters
supporting the main floats.
Carnival organiser Mike Harper said: It was a brilliant day,
the weather was kind to us, thousands of people turned out to support
the carnival and the massed bands.
I would like to say a big thank-you to everyone who took part,
and I hope theyll all take part again next year. It was an
amazing feeling having so many pipers there and we are already expecting
to have more next year.
To the pipe bands of the region, Bideford has become the
big annual meeting place. The people give them such a warm welcome
and they seem to enjoy coming
