Scarecrows take over villageby
Geoff StaddonWORLD leaders, royalty, super heroes and sports
personalities were just some of the special guests in Horwood over the weekend
as the village held its second annual Scarecrow Festival.
More than 50
colourful straw-stuffed characters took up residence in gardens, peeped over hedges
and even swung from the trees while visitors toured the village to see and identify
them in a scarecrow spotting competition.
Torrential rain on Sunday meant
overall visitor numbers were less than the estimated 2,000 of last year, but Saturday
was a bumper day and hundreds still turned out on Sunday.
Overall
it was a huge success, said Jill Barriball of the organising village committee.
In
fact, on Saturday, we were starting to wonder if it was almost too big for the
village with the number of people who were coming in. They came from far afield,
one family even travelling 150 miles especially to see the scarecrows. We really
needed a quieter second day, but would rather have not had the rain.
As
well as the scarecrows there was music from the Bideford Morris Men, Barnstaple
Concert Band and Torrington Silver Band, sports for all ages and story telling
by Peter Burford.
Horwoods scarecrows were part of the North Devon
Festival and raised funds towards restoration work on the Parish Church and other
local charities. | |
