The 18-year-old narrowly escaped disqualification after officers found him drunk in the early hours of the morning.

A YOUNG chef from Martinhoe escaped a driving disqualification after police found him drunkenly slumped asleep astride his motorcycle.

Daniel Puttick-Glover, 18, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen after police found him in Ashleigh Road at around 2.40am on June 27.

Puttick-Glover was wearing his motorcycle overalls and was sat on his bike slumped over his helmet fast asleep, North Devon Magistrates’ Court heard.

Officers tried to rouse him, but he was so intoxicated they had to carry him back to the police car, where he was taken to custody.

The court heard Puttick-Glover was physically sick and heavily drunk, and despite trying to give a breath test he claimed he couldn’t and was out of breath.

Tim Hook, defending, said the young man had not deliberately tried to evade the breath test, he had merely been too drunk comply.

Mr Hook said Puttick-Glover worked 40 hours a week as a chef and attended a course at Petroc three days a week, all of which he relied on his 125cc motorcycle for.

“He lives in what I would describe as one of the most remote places in North Devon,” he said.

Magistrates endorsed Puttick-Glover’s license with 10 penalty points and ordered him to pay a £200 fine, £85 in costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
