Lifeboat crews launched to 5am mayday call from yacht which had lost its power and was bbeing blown towards Lantern Hill.

A YACHT which lost its engine power was rescued from being blown onto shore in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday) by Ilfracombe RNLI.

Shortly after 5am the distress call came in, with the 21ft Cariady Mor from Bristol precariously close to the dangerous rocks around Lantern Hill.

The yacht had lost engine power and drained what was left by attempting to restart the engine. With a stronger nothernly wind the skipper put out a desperate mayday call.

Local fishing boat Our Jenny responded to the call as the lifeboats launched and headed to the scene to stand by the stricken yacht.

Crews on the Spirit of Derbyshire and Deborah Brown II reached the yacht within minutes and managed to tow her safely away from the shoreline.

The yacht was safely moored in the harbour and three anxious crew members given a cup of tea at the lifeboat station to calm their frazzled nerves.

Andrew Bengey, Ilfracombe RNLI’s volunteer coxswain, said: “Although this rescue was very short in terms of time at sea, it was very successful.

“Three lives were definitely at risk this morning due to the close proximity of the rocks.

“The quick response of our volunteer lifeboat crew members meant that in a very dangerous situation, those three lives were saved.”
