Cemetery extension will serve the town for the next 100 years.

WORK has started to provide burial space in South Molton for the next 100 years.

The extension of the town’s cemetery into an expanse of green known locally as the sheep fair field is being carried out by South Molton Town Council.

Town clerk Malcolm Gingell said the council had originally bought the land, off Mill Street and Williamson Way, with the intention of extending the cemetery.

Work began two weeks ago and is expected to take around two months to complete.

Mr Gingell said: “We’ve got to do this work; if we didn’t do it South Molton would run out of space, nobody would be buried in the town. There is no where else to be buried.

“Bearing in mind that burial is not as popular as it once was, the extension should last the town for another 100 years.”

The project is being paid for by the town council at a cost in excess of £40,000. Work includes the construction of a wall topped with wrought iron railings and gates to match that of the existing cemetery.

At last night’s town council meeting, members were being asked whether they wanted to pay up to a further £1,000 to have the new burial ground consecrated, possibly by the Bishop of Exeter.
