Councillors cut turf to start work on new roundabout linking to Agri-Business Centre

WORK is underway on a new £900,000 roundabout linking to the Holsworthy Agri-Business Centre.

The scheme, which got underway with a ceremonial turf cut on Friday, will develop a new roundabout at the junction of the A388 and Blind Lane/New Market Road.

A number of Torridge District Councillors donned their hard hats and high-vis jackets last week, joined by County Councillors, as the site began its 15-week transformation.

The intention is to provide safer access for the increased traffic volumes which are expected when the Holsworthy Agricultural Business Centre opens.

The need for the highway improvements were highlighted as part of the planning application for the £6million business centre.

Plans also include an off-road pedestrian and cycle link to the new centre from Blind Lane to Quagmire Lane.

Councillor Barry Parsons, Devon County Councillor for Holsworthy Rural, said: “The Holsworthy Agribusiness Centre is the largest project ever undertaken by Torridge District Council and has the huge support of Devon County Council.

“It is a project four years in the making in order to create a sustainable Market Town for the future.

“The economic implications for Holsworthy and its surrounds are massive – a real catalyst for growth across the region and including different business sectors such as the high presence in Holsworthy of banks, solicitors, accountants, retail, catering and largest vet practice in the South West.

“I am proud to have been so heavily involved in this project right from the start and believe it will give significant social as well as economic benefit to the community of Holsworthy and surrounding parishes who have embraced this project from the word go.”

The construction work, which should take 15 weeks to complete, will be carried out by Britannia Construction Ltd.
