A WOMAN who was airlifted to hospital from Croyde beach today (Tues) has died.

The Coastguard was called to the scene at around 11.24am after reports that the woman, who was believed to have been swimming or surfing at the time, was swept out to sea.

Despite search attempts by the Chivenor Sea King helicopter and the RNLI lifeboat crews, the woman wasn’t found until she was removed from the water at 1pm.

She was airlifted to North Devon District Hospital where attempts were made to revive her but were unsuccessful. Her family have been notified.

Police are now preparing a file for the coroner.
