POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman died in a crash on the Atlantic Highway near Bideford on Saturday.

The collision involving a red Ford Ka, travelling from Barnstaple, and Volkswagen Scirocco, travelling from Bideford, happened shortly after 1.30pm, about a mile from Bideford.

The 67-year-old Ka passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 56-year-old driver was taken to Derriford Hospital with serious head injuries.

The 69-year-old driver of the Scirocco was taken to North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple with serious leg injuries.

Police said both cars were locally registered and next of kin had been informed.

The A39 was closed in both directions from the Heywood Road roundabout in Bideford to the Roundswell roundabout in Barnstaple for several hours and reopened at 9.30pm.

Police said a formal investigation was now under way to establish the cause of the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call 101 quoting log number 440 of February 22.
