Barnstaple and Bideford roads included in major £7m works programme to tackle potholes.

WINTER damaged roads in North Devon are to undergo repairs as part of a £7million pothole fund, it has been announced today (Monday).

Eastern Avenue in Barnstaple; Mullacott Cross near Ilfracombe; Kingsley Road in Bideford; and Windmill Road in Holsworthy are among those to be restored following the wettest winter on record.

Devon County Council has earmarked 250 repair schemes and says it will fix nearly 40 miles of roads across the county.

The council has filled more than 39,000 potholes this year but said it was still dealing with the legacy of damage caused by the storms of 2012/13.

The new programme of work will include surfacing and patching work on mostly main roads.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Cabinet Member for Highway Management and Flood Prevention, said: “Our highways teams have carried out a thorough inspection of our highway network in order to put together this programme and ensure that the funding is put to use where it can have most impact.

“ The schemes which have been identified will cost effectively repair and protect parts of our network

“£7m will go some way towards covering the cost of some of the damage to Devon’s roads, but due to the size of our highway network it certainly won’t fund the repair of everything that was damaged over the winter.

“We have submitted a bid for a share of the £168m pothole grant and hopefully we will receive a fair share of this money which will enable the County Council to continue with the recovery effort.”

Other North Devon roads to benefit include Watersmeet Road in Lynmouth; Combe Martin High Street; South Street in South Molton; Umberleigh Bridge; Waterloo Hill in Rackenford; and Cedar Grove in Fremington.

In Torridge, Triggers Hill in Beaford; the A386 at Frithelstock; the B3248 at Hartland; Broad Street in Black Torrington; and Sandymere Road in Northam will also be repaired.
