‘Absolutely superb’ was how organisers described a triumphant Combe Martin carnival week.

A slight hiccough in the form of high winds put paid to the raft race, but the rest of the week went off without a hitch, with both the main parade on Wednesday and Friday’s wheelbarrow race hailed a great success.

“Thank you to everybody in the village who took part, put pennies in our buckets and the army of people who helped out, too many to mention,” said Carol Crawford, carnival committee chairman.

“It’s a massive team effort to put on such a big event and we couldn’t do it without them.”

Local police were well pleased too, with Sergeant Paul Jones at Ilfracombe saying both parades passed off peacefully and with no incidents reported.

“This was the first time that I had worked either the Combe Martin Carnival or the Wheelbarrow Race and I would have to say how impressed I was with the atmosphere at both events,” he said.

“They were a credit to the organisers and the community alike.”

In the main parade, the Farmyard Friends team took the best original award and best overall trophy with their float Frozen.

Best prettiest float went to Wizard of Oz and best comedy float to Shaun the Sheep.

There were plenty of walking teams, with the best original and overall award going to Combe Martin Pre-school. The best original walkers was won by Cobbled Together Clowns, with best prettiest walkers award going to How to Train Your Dragon.

More than 100 children also turned out for the popular Children’s Pavement Art Competition on Friday morning, while the evening’s wheelbarrow race was won by Men in Black, with The Hobbit – complete with a full size talking Gollum – taking best fancy dress.

Carol said the closing firework display was superb, with several saying it was the best they had seen. On Saturday more than 30 vehicles took part in the static motor show at the Pack O’ Cards, Vince Payne winning the overall trophy with his 1954 Vauxhall Velux.

The week was rounded off on Saturday evening with a Carnival Ceilidh and presentation evening at the Castle Inn. Trophies were awarded to the winning teams by Carnival Ambassador Phoebe Bradshaw.

A special mention goes to an unsuspecting Gwen Eastman, who received the Christian Fellowship Trophy for outstanding service to the community.
