New development will nod to Kingsley’s beautiful fictional heroine.

JD WETHERSPOON has revealed the name of a new pub set to open in Bideford this summer.

The £1.5 million development in the former Bideford Carpet and Furnishing Centre in Bridgeland Street will be called The Rose Salterne, after the heroine of Charles Kingsley’s famous novel Westward Ho!

In the story, written in 1854 but set in the time of Sir Francis Drake, the Salterne family live in Bridgeland Street and Rose is described as ‘a beautiful girl of 18, that half North Devon was mad about’.

Rose Salterne is also known as the ‘Rose of Torridge’, a reference that can still be seen in Bideford today above the Mr Chips fish and chip shop on the Quay.

Wetherspoon carried out its own research on Bideford and considered a number of possible options before settling on the nod to Kingsley.

It looked at The Nathaniel Gascoigne, after the surveyor who developed the ‘handsome houses’ of Bridgeland Street for wealthy, ship-owning merchants in the 17th century.

It also considered the name The Palace, after the former Palace Cinema that stood on the site until 1962, when it became Ford & Lock’s supermarket.

Another possibility was The Silver Ship after the silver model ship presented to the town by MP Sir Basil Peto after Bideford was officially re-designated as a port in 1928.

Other names considered were The Sir Richard Grenville, The Sir Charles Kingsley and The Golden Lion, the ship commanded by William Burrough during Sir Francis Drake’s successful 1587 raid on the Armada fleet gathered in Cadiz.

Wetherspoon say the new two-storey pub is expected to create up to 45 full and part time jobs and should open for business on July 23.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We are looking forward to opening our new pub in Bideford and believe that it will be an asset to the town and be welcomed by people of all ages.

“We hope that it will also act as a catalyst for other business people to invest further in the town.”
