WESTWARD Ho! beach has been awarded a blue flag for the 11th year in a row despite the storm damage suffered this year.

Keep Britain Tidy’s blue flag award recognises environmental and educational services and management, safety and water quality.

Cllr Philip Collins, leader of Torridge, said: “To receive this nationwide award of excellence shows Westward Ho! is clean, safe, easily accessible and a great place to come on holiday.

“It is a wonderful stretch of sand which attracts many, many visitors and locals each year.”

In February the Gazette reported how high spring tides had swept much of the beach’s golden sand away, leaving bare rocks in its wake.

As the summer season approaches, some of the sand has begun to wash back onto the beach but many rocks are still exposed at the shoreline.

Councillor Roger Tisdale, ward member for Westward Ho! said: “I’m delighted that Westward Ho! has once again received the blue flag and seaside awards recognising all the hard work by everybody committed to making our beach a venue we can all be proud of.

“It’s an assurance this is one of the best beaches in Europe with guaranteed water quality.

“To have received the Blue Flag award eleven years in succession is a considerable achievement and I hope will encourage more people to come and experience Torridge’s ‘jewel in the crown’ for themselves.”
