Westward Ho! businessman Steve Taylor set out to collect a ton of food for Harbour Bideford, but ended up with four.

The donations had to be craned in. The donations had to be craned in.

A Westward Ho! businessman was astounded when he set himself a challenge to collect a ton of food in a week - and ended up with four.

Steve Taylor. who owns Westward Ho! Hardware Stores, wanted to collect food and basic supplies for the charity Harbour in Bideford.

He put an appeal out on Facebook, hoping to receive some support from local people.

But he was amazed when dozens of local people and businesses got behind the campaign in a matter of days.

He ended up collecting so much food it had to be craned out of the village - thanks to a lorry donated by RGB Building Suppliers.

“I knew there was a call for help from Harbour and I wanted to do something,” Steve told the Gazette.

“I am just absolutely amazed at how much we’ve raised and how generous businesses have been.”

Harbour runs a day centre providing hot meals, support and accomodation to those in crisis.
