Westward Ho! traders: "We are open for business"

Shops in Nelson Road offer to refund customers’ parking to encourage trade during four-week road closure.

BUSINESSES in Westward Ho! are offering to refund customers’ parking if they keep visiting them during a four-week road closure.

Shops in Nelson Road said they feel they have been ‘cut off’ as they usually rely on passing trade and drivers taking advantage of the free 20 minute parking outside.

Works to install a new sewer began on January 6, and Delica Devon owner Bev Coombe said since the closure it’s been ‘like a ghost town’.

“I had to the workmen to put up a ‘business open as usual’ sign because the other signs said ‘access for residents only’,” said Bev.

“Otherwise people think the businesses are closed. It’s not good as we usually rely on people pulling up outside to quickly grab their food.

“As it’s only 30p to park for half an hour in the main car park around the corner; if people come in and buy a roll or a wrap I’ll refund their parking ticket.”

Bev has floated the idea to other traders and Cam and Ben Lavis, of the Nisa Local Store, will also be offering customers who spend £10 (with the exception of alcohol and tobacco) or more their 30p parking ticket back.

Ben said: “We’ve lost all the trade from the people who pass through Nelson Road on their way to work and stop and pick up things like papers.

“We are still open for business and we want to thank all of our customers who have continued to come to the shop.”

The £60,000 scheme to install 150 new metres of sewerage pipe work is being carried out by South West Water and H5O.
