Rowing cancelled but still plenty of family fun on the Strand
HURRICANE Bertha couldn’t keep people away from Barnstaple’s first-ever regatta on Sunday – even if it did put paid to the rowing races.
Families battled through the breeze to the Strand, where they were entertained by a number of local groups.
These included the ‘Shake a Leg’ sea shanty singers, the Bovver Boys Skiffle group, Exmoor Border Morris Dancers and a traditional Punch and Judy show.
There were also a number of stalls on the day.
But not everything went to plan, as the gig rowing, scheduled for 5.30pm, had to be cancelled due to the treacherous conditions out on the River Taw.
Despite this, though, there was still enough on offer to suggest the regatta could become a popular addition to Barnstaple’s annual events calendar.
