A film producer and director who has led expeditions across the globe has produced a short film about a Barnstaple beauty spot under threat from developers.

A television producer and director who has made programmes for most of the major broadcasters has produced a film about Mannings Pit in Barnstaple.

Martin Kemp has led film expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, has trekked jungles and deserts and climbed mountains and volcanoes.

And now he has produced The Magic of Manning’s Pit, a short film highlighting the beauty spot in North Devon.

The film, which you can watch above, was launched in a ‘guerrilla premiere’ at a consultation for 140 new homes in Pilton yesterday (Monday).

Martin, who’s showreel includes documentaries for BBC, Channel Four, National Geographic and Discover, said the film was shown ‘non stop’ to people yesterday.

Martin said: “There is such a strong feeling, this is more than just a group of NIMBYS, this is something special.”

There has been strong public opposition to any development on the Mannings Pit site since it was sold at auction in October to an unnamed buyer.

Local people say generations have grown up enjoying walking and playing at the picturesque meadow.

Developer Framptons says it is working on a scheme for up to 138 affordable and open-market homes on the land off Windsor Road.

It says the proposal will include a range of family homes, public open space and an ‘ecology park’.
