Barnstaple Lions Club gives John a helping hand.
BARNSTAPLE Lions Club showed some good old fashioned Devon hospitality when they came to the aid of a charity walker trekking through the county.
John Pedley, 59, from York, is currently part-way through a 1,200-mile solo hike from Land’s End to John O’ Groats in aid of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.
And he found a bed for a night in North Devon thanks to the swift-thinking actions of club members and the generosity of a B&B owner.
Andy Shiner said: “We heard about John’s walk through Lions clubs in Cornwall and were happy to help out and arrange some accommodation for him in North Devon.
“He left Clovelly that morning and walked to Bideford and along the Tarka Trail to Barnstaple.
“We spoke to the owner of the Old Forge in Bishops Tawton and managed to organise some accommodation and the Chichester Arms pub gave him a nice welcome with a hot cooked meal.”
Andy even ferried the bags onto Simonsbath ahead of John’s next stop-off the following day.
“We were happy to do what we could to help – John is a lovely bloke and we wish him all the best for the rest of his walk,” added Andy.
Former insurance worker John is walking in memory of his late wife Jane, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma but died of an infection following a stem cell transplant in February last year.
He set off from Land’s End on March 24 and is aiming to reach John O’ Groats in early June.
“I intend to spend as many nights as I can under canvas, with occasional B&B or YHA,” he said.
John has already raised nearly £4,500 for the blood cancer charity. To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/john-pedley
