THE inpatient ward at Ilfracombe’s Tyrrell Hospital is set to reopen later this week following a three-month closure.

The 10-bed ward had to be temporarily closed at the end of October due to safety concerns over the lift, with inpatients and some staff transferring to South Molton Hospital.

The work is now complete and the lift is fully operational with upgraded control and alarm systems.

Carolyn Mills, director of nursing for the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience the temporary closure has caused, but patient safety is our number one priority and it was a decision we had to take.

“We look forward to reopening the beds at Tyrrell.”

Current patients who would ordinarily have come to Tyrrell will remain at South Molton, while Ilfracombe will be open to new admissions.

The trust said that the original lift broke down three times in late October and, following expert advice, it was decided to upgrade the control system rather than repair the existing one.
