WAGGING tails and applause greeted the official opening of the Dogs Trust Ilfracombe Rehoming centre on Friday after a £2.1million rebuild.

Rescue puppies and dogs joined Dogs Trust chief executive Clarissa Baldwin OBE, deputy chairman John Gaye, children from Kingsacre Primary School in Braunton, guests, staff and volunteers to mark the end of 17 months of building work.

The result is a state-of-the-art centre that includes new modern glass fronted kennels, a training building, dog assessment room, outdoor runs in astro turf, sand and concrete, a puppy block, a veterinary room and two grooming rooms.

It is a far cry from the dated concrete kennel blocks that were there before and it is hoped the work will enable even more dogs to find new homes.

Since 1975 the centre near West Down has cared for almost 21,000 dogs of all shapes and sizes. The rebuild will now enable its 15 staff to look after around 70 rescue dogs at any one time.

Speaking at the opening, centre manager Pam Stow said they were delighted to be reopening and looked forward to helping more rescue dogs find their ‘forever homes’.

“The driving force behind the design improvements is the desire to constantly improve the environment for the dogs in our care,” she said.

“Happier dogs results in them being easier to rehome and as we have a non destruction policy, this is a priority for us.”

There is always a need for more volunteers, so anyone interested in finding out more can call the centre on 01271 812709 or visit www.dogstrust.org.uk.
