COMMUNITY sprit shone through in Westward Ho! this weekend as a group of volunteers rallied together to clear the bridge across the pebble ridge.

Local resident Jon Webb posted a message on a Facebook group saying he would be going down to clear the pebbles on Saturday and anyone was welcome to join him.

“I was aware people were worried about needing insurance for an organised event, so I tried to word it cleverly and say I was going down myself,” he said.

“If by chance a few other people came down then great, but I was amazed to see around 25 people actually turned up.”

Since the spring tides in February, the bridge over the ridge had been completely covered in large pebbles, in places around three feet deep.

Jon added: “In around an hour and a half we had cleared the entire bridge – it was great community spirit, one man couldn’t have done it on his own.

“A lot of people – myself included – walk our dogs across the ridge and despite asking the council after all this time still had not cleared it.

“I think this is a great example of people power. I thought, if the council haven’t done anything, we can just get on and do it ourselves.”

A Facebook group set up earlier this year to bring potwalloping back to Westward Ho! now has more than 2,700 members.

The annual festival was last held in 2012 where visitors and locals alike would throw the pebbles back onto the ridge.

Mark Stewart, who started the group, said: “Surely now the council can see that the people are willing and able?

“Now is the time to take up the reigns councillors, and make potwalloping happen.”
