The Chivenor search and rescue helicopter was called out to Barnstaple this afternoon (Mon) after reports of a man jumping from the bridge.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 2.45pm after a 64-year-old man from the North Devon area reportedly jumped from Barnstaple old bridge.

police managed to get the man out of the water and onto the riverbank.

The Sea King holicopter was then seen hovering over the riverbed and winching a man from the scene.

The man was taken to North Devon Hospital for treatment, though his condition is not known.

Eyewitnesses took to Twitter to post photos of the dramatic rescue.

@bisleythedog said: “Her and him just saw helicopter rescue over #barnstaple #oldbridge - anyone know what’s happened? Loads of police.”

Meanwhile @simonpaddon said: “Helicopter very low over the river in Barnstaple!!”
