North Devon Council learns water supply pipes must be replaced to comply with current regulations.

THE water pipes at Ilfracombe Harbour are having to be replaced at a cost of £32,000.

North Devon Council’s executive has taken the urgent decision to upgrade the pipework after it was found to be in a very poor condition.

South West Water asked for the work to be carried out immediately or the water supply removed – a similar case in south Devon saw a council slapped with a fine of around £50,000.

Harbour Board chairman and Ilfracombe District Councillor Geoff Fowler said there had been ongoing problems with the water supply at the Pier, which had been difficult to get to the bottom of due to the location and the state of the existing pipes.

“Realistically, the network had come to the end of its lifespan,” he said.

“This will overcome the leak problems we have been having, plus the health and Safety Executive (HSE) has also looked at the existing outlets around the harbour and because of new EU regulations they don’t meet the required standards.

“This is not just our harbour, this is happening all around the country.”

A total of £17,700 will be taken from the existing revenue budget and the remainder from the council’s reserves.

Contractors are scheduled to be on site from Tuesday, April 22, and the work is expected to take around a month to complete. Disruption will be minimised as much as possible.
