A 32-year-old man from Barnstaple has been arrested after reports he was allegedly threatening to harm himself and others with a gun.

Craig Lethaby, from Barnstaple, was charged with possession of an imitation firearm and will appear before North Devon Magistrates Court today (Wednesday).

Armed officers surrounded the property in Castle Street at around 4pm on Monday and closed off the road.

The public were warned to stay away from the area as officers spent several hours negotiating with the man.

After more than three hours, the man surrendered himself and was arrested at 7.45pm.

A police spokesman said: “We would like to thank the local community for their cooperation and patience during the period the cordon was in place.”
