Braunton, Barnstaple, Ilfracombe and Combe Martin could all face possible flooding today (Fri).

THE Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for Barnstaple, Braunton and Ilfracombe and Combe Martin.

Flooding is possible for the next six-to-12 hours for the rivers Caen, Bradiford Water and Yeo as well as coastal streams from Braunton to Combe Martin.

Following our initial story at 2.50pm, further alerts have also been issued for the lower and upper Torridge area and the lower Taw area.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “Up to 20 mm of rain is forecast this afternoon.

“Any remaining snow in the catchments is expected to melt, increasing river levels.

“Rivers are expected to cause flooding of low lying fields and roads.

“Some areas will reach flood warning criteria during the night tonight.

“There is also likely to be local issues caused by overwhelmed drainage of fields and roads.

“After a brief respite during Saturday daytime further rainfall is expected Saturday evening onwards, intermittently at times.

“This Flood Alert is likely to remain in force till after the weekend.”

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of rain for today, Sunday and Tuesday.

A spokesman for the forecasters said: “Heavy rain will spread from the southwest on Tuesday, and will be accompanied by strong to gale force winds, especially on high ground and in western parts of Britain.”
