Updated: Fire fighters tackle major Holsworthy barn blaze involving asbestos

Crews asking local residents to stay indoors after confirming high volume of asbestos at fire involving 700 hay bales.

HOLSWORTHY residents and business owners are being advised to stay indoors with their windows and doors closed after a barn fire involving asbestos.

Fire fighters are currently the blaze involving 700 bales of hay and at Ratherton Farm in Holsworthy after being called out at 7.15am this morning (Tuesday).

Crews from Holsworthy, Hatherleigh, Bude and Barnstaple found the barn well alight and set to work using two hose reel jets, two breathing apparatus, a covering jet and a safety jet.

By 10am the barn was confirmed to be 50m by 50m and were decontaminating the area after upgrading the incident to ‘asbestos major’ due to the amount involved.

The barn was still reported to be ablaze and the number of fire fighters increased to help combat the flames.

By 11.20am the fire was reported to be under control with relief crews to arrive from Hartland, Bideford, North Tawton and Tavistock by midday.

The fire service are advising local residents and businesses in the area to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.
