North Devon Council has given Tesco the go-ahead for it’s third store in the town.

PLANS for a new Tesco Express store in Barnstaple High Street have been given the go-ahead by North Devon Council.

Applications for a new shop front, signage and an ATM submitted in December were approved by the council last week at 100-101 High Street.

A spokesman for Tesco said the store could create around 20 new jobs in the town.

He said: “We’re hoping to open the store in the summer, bringing our popular Express offer to customers in Barnstaple and creating around 20 jobs.”

The store will be the firm’s third supermarket in the town and the sixth in North Devon.

On the North Devon Gazette Facebook page, dozens of people have been commenting both for and against the idea of a third Tesco in the town.

Kristian Pugsley said: “We need independent shops otherwise you might as well bulldoze Barnstaple now.

“All these chain shops just take money away from the town.”

But Jess Dennis said: “This is exactly what the high street needs…a shop you can quickly pop into to get a few bits at lunchtime whilst in town.”

Steve Pugsley said the store would be “another nail in the coffin of the high street” whereas Nikki Taylor said it would be “a great idea for people who do not drive.”

Danny Chappell suggested the high street needed a shop that ‘stood out’ and encouraged local art or produce.

He said: “Sadly, in this day and age though, that means it will be more costly and, due to lack of disposal income to a majority of households in the Barnstaple area, it means it will perish which is sad.

“Maybe the council could fund an independent and give local budding businesses a month at a time to make a go of it.”
