Update: Northam hay fire ‘started deliberately’

09:15 03 September 2013

Police keen to speak to witness who may have seen two people flee scene.

POLICE suspect arsonists are to blame for a fire in Northam on Monday evening.

Around £6,000 worth of damage was caused to 20 tonnes of hay and two agricultural trailers during the blaze in Churchill Way shortly before 7.30pm.

One fire engine from Appledore and another from Bideford were called to the scene at Marshford House.

They found two large bales of hay well alight and used a main jet via a street hydrant to allow the hay to burn out under control.

Police attended the scene to provide traffic control while fire crews spent some time turning over and damping down hot spots.

The incident is being investigated by police and officers from Devon and Somerset Fire Service

Police are particularly keen to identify a witness who may have seen two people run away from the scene.

Anyone with any information can contact 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 quoting crime reference number CD/13/1657.
