Police appeal for witnesses after Trinity Street attack leaves 60-year-old victim confused and frightened.

WITNESSES have been urged to come forward after an elderly man with learning difficulties was punched during a shocking unprovoked attack in Barnstaple.

Police said the 60-year-old had been walking in Trinity Street on Thursday, March 27 when a man punched him hard in the back of his head.

The attack was at around 3.20pm near the entrance to the car park and police would like to speak to an unknown female witness who approached the victim afterwards and asked if he was okay.

“This was an unprovoked attack on a 60 year old victim with learning difficulties,” said PC Nick Rowell at Barnstaple CID.

“Unable to defend himself he has been left confused and frightened by what has happened. It is very sad that members of our society should prey on someone so vulnerable.”

The attacker is described as a white man in his late 20s and approximately five foot 10 in height and of fit, proportionate build. He had ‘skinhead’ style shaved brown hair and a gold stud in his right ear.

Anyone who saw anything is urged to call police by dialling 101, quoting CB/14/982.
