Town councillor’s bid to buy gas detector for Bideford fire station

Councillor proposed buying specialist equipment for fire station after fire crews responded to gas alarm at his home.

A BIDEFORD town councillor is hoping to equip Bideford fire station with a brand new gas detector after a carbon monoxide alarm sounded in his house.

Cllr Tony Inch said he returned home one night to find his gas alarm sounding and called the fire brigade, with two crews from Bideford swiftly turning up.

“But they then had to then call a crew from Barnstaple, because the station does not have the equipment to detect how much carbon monoxide there was,” Cllr Inch told Bideford Town Councillors on Thursday.

“I think that’s pretty bad really, the cost of bringing the fire engine all the way from Barnstaple.

“I was wondering if it was something I should bring to council, for us to purchase a gas monitor to help the fire brigade of Bideford.

“It would cut their costs and help the people of Bideford as well.”

Station manager Graham Rooke told councillors he did not know how much a detector would cost, but estimated it could be thousands-of-pounds.

Councillors agreed it would be a good motion to be brought back to a future meeting.
