New bronze landmark unveiled on hill in Ilfracombe.

A NEW BRONZE landmark that towers above even Verity was unveiled in Ilfracombe on Monday.

A toposcope has been erected at the Torrs overlooking the town and the Bristol Channel to replace one that went missing 15 years ago.

The 1.1 metre circular marker enjoys panoramic views along the coast and points towards significant landmarks such as east towards Exmoor, west towards Bull Point and Lundy, and north across the sea to the Gower Peninsular in Wales.

It was designed by students of Ilfracombe Arts College before being cast in bronze set into a stone cairn. It reflects the town’s Victorian heritage, wildlife, landscape and North Devon’s surf scene.

It was made possible following a partnership between the National Trust, college students and the South West Coast Path team as part of the European funded ‘Unlocking Our Coastal Heritage Discovery Point’ project to provide a series of ‘Discovery Points’ along the coast path.

“It’s great that we have finally been able to replace the toposcope,” said trust head ranger Jonathan Fairhurst.

“The Trust has match funded the project and the designers have done an excellent job. We now have an up-to-date landmark which reflects the area’s national and cultural heritage as seen through the eyes of local students.”
