Torrington residents will be protesting against bed closures once more.


STITCH group organises ‘call to action day’ with speakers, a song about the bed closures and even a dance troup.

PEOPLE in Torrington will be rallying once more next weekend in support of their community hospital.

The Save Torrington’s Irreplaceable Community Hospital (STITCH) group have organised a ‘call to action day’ on February 8 in the Square at 11am.

Public consultation on the closure of the Torrington Hospital inpatient beds is due to end on March 31.

MP Geoffrey Cox, Torridge council leader Cllr Philip Collins, retired GP Dr Jean Tyler and Torrington mayor Harold Martin are among those invited to speak.

Town crier Al Mitchell has co-written a song about the bed closures and STITCH chairman Margaret Brown has organised the Streetz dance troup to perform on the day.

Mr Cox said: “Torrington Hospital is an extremely valuable resource to local residents, providing them with access to a range of health services, and it would be a massive loss to the town if the hospital were abandoned.

“People fear that the loss of the beds is the first step along that road.

“I have always supported the campaign to keep a full range of services at Great Torrington hospital, and will be joining this march as a public demonstration of my support.”

The ‘call to action day’ is being held to promote a public meeting on the bed closures on February 22, from 11am until 1pm in the Howe Concert Hall.
