Torrington pair illegally claimed £18,000 in benefits

Pair were sentenced at North Devon Magistrates’s Court on Friday.
A TORRINGTON pair has pleaded guilty to illegally claiming more than £18,000 in benefits.
Victoria Richards, 20, of North Road, Bideford pleaded guilty to four charges and was sentenced to attend eight sessions of the Engage Women Programme and pay £250 in costs.
Nigel Hancock, 47, of the same address, pleaded guilty to two charges and was sentenced to a community order with 150 hours of unpaid work and to pay £500 in costs.
Cllr Philip Collins, leader of Torridge District Council, said: “Five prosecutions in recent months gives us no pleasure. But we have a duty to protect the public purse and to prosecute fraudulent benefit claims.
“As recently proved our team will catch those people who cheat the rest of society by fraudulently claiming.”
