Pair were sentenced at North Devon Magistrates’s Court on Friday.

A TORRINGTON pair has pleaded guilty to illegally claiming more than £18,000 in benefits.

Victoria Richards, 20, of North Road, Bideford pleaded guilty to four charges and was sentenced to attend eight sessions of the Engage Women Programme and pay £250 in costs.

Nigel Hancock, 47, of the same address, pleaded guilty to two charges and was sentenced to a community order with 150 hours of unpaid work and to pay £500 in costs.

Cllr Philip Collins, leader of Torridge District Council, said: “Five prosecutions in recent months gives us no pleasure. But we have a duty to protect the public purse and to prosecute fraudulent benefit claims.

“As recently proved our team will catch those people who cheat the rest of society by fraudulently claiming.”

If you suspect anyone of claiming benefits when they shouldn’t be, call Torridge’s Fraud Hotline in confidence on 01237 429292.
