Torrington receives brand new refuse trucks

Council invests £256,000 in new trucks for Torrington.

TORRIDGE District Council has invested £256,000 in two ‘state of the art’ refuse and recycling trucks in Torrington.

The trucks will replace the existing ones which have been in use since 2005 – three years longer than their average life span.

Cllr Chris Leather, lead member of waste and recycling, said: “The state of the art organic truck is fitted with a special electric lifter for the green wheelie bins, meaning that they will be a lot quieter than the current trucks as the engines will not rev up each time a bin is emptied.

“Some of our rounds begin very early in the morning, so I hope local residents will appreciate a longer lie in.

“There will be immediate financial savings in that there will be reduced fuel consumption, and of course fewer CO2 emissions.”

One of the old trucks will be sold off, and the other will be broken down as spares for the new ones.

Cllr Leather added: “It’s a big £256k investment, but it’s necessary and by years four and five extra savings should be realised.

“Our existing trucks have been maintained well by our staff and have lasted longer than is normal, but the time is right for them to be replaced.”
