Town to vote on re-opening beds at Torrington Hospital tomorrow (Wednesday).

TORRINGTON residents will be voting tomorrow (Wednesday) in a referendum on whether its hospital’s beds should be reopened.

The parish poll was the idea of the Save Torrington’s Irreplaceable Torrington Cottage Hospital (STITCH) group and will take place between 4pm and 9pm.

Polling stations will be at Great Torrington School and Torrington Methodist Church and STITCH members will be supplying lifts to those otherwise unable to vote.

Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox, who has supported the campaign to maintain services and inpatients beds, also visited the hospital this week.

He met with members of the Clinical Commissioning Group and discussed with them and members of the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust the future of the hospital.

He said: “The conduct of the consultation with local people has not been handled well and as a result there is a lack of trust in the case made by the Trust and the CCG.

“Throughout this process I have strongly urged our health authorities to be fully transparent about the alternatives, and have suggested that there was a very good case for calling a halt to the current process and starting again if needs be.

“In the meantime, the beds should be open and used.”

The results of the referendum today will be sent to the CCG and NHS Trust. Anyone who needs a lift can contact STITCH chairman Margaret Brown on 01805 624375.
